If you smell gas, none of the above applies
Leave the building straight away. Do not flip switches, do not use the phone indoors, and do not go looking for the source. Once you are outside and clear, call 911 or your gas utility answering service after hours; service scheduled during normal business hours. They come first, not us. Call us afterward and we will handle the gas piping repair once the gas side has been made safe.
Which Valve Do You Have, and Which Way Does It Turn
Look where the water line enters the house: a crawl space, a garage wall, a basement, or in a box near the street. You will find one of these two. They do not work the same way, and the difference is why people give up on a valve that was about to close.
Round wheel, several turns
A gate valve. Turn it clockwise, the same direction as a tap. It can take several full turns before the water actually stops, so keep going. If it is stiff, turn steadily rather than forcing it.
Lever, one quarter turn
A ball valve. One quarter turn is the whole travel. When the lever sits crosswise to the pipe it is shut. If it is still lying along the pipe, it is still open.
If you cannot find it, or it will not budge, stop. Do not force a seized valve, because snapping the stem turns one problem into two. Call your water utility and ask them to shut it off at the meter, then call us. And once this is over, go and find that valve on a dry afternoon so you are not looking for it in the dark next time.
