Signs You Need Garbage Disposal Repair

Strange noises
Grinding, rattling, or humming usually means a mechanical problem or something stuck inside the unit.
Frequent jamming
A disposal that keeps locking up points to a bigger problem with its internal components.
Water leaks
Leaks from the disposal or its drain lines can ruin the flooring and cabinets under your sink.
Slow draining
A disposal that drains slowly may have a clog nearby or deeper in the line. A camera inspection may be needed.
No power
If the unit will not turn on, the switch, outlet, or internal motor may be damaged and need attention.
Persistent odors
A smell that returns no matter how much you clean often means food is trapped where the unit can no longer clear it.
Dead Disposal? Listen to It First
The sound tells you which of two free fixes you need, and they are not interchangeable. A disposal that hums is getting power and cannot turn, which is a jam. A disposal that is silent is not getting power at all. Same dead disposal, two completely different two minute fixes, and both of them are yours for nothing.
One rule before anything else
Never put your hand into a disposal. Not when it is switched off, not when it seems dead, not for a second to grab something. Use the hex key from underneath and tongs from above. The manufacturers say this in their own manuals and they are right. Switch the unit off at the wall and unplug it or kill the breaker before you touch anything.
If it hums
The motor has power and the flywheel is stuck.
- Switch it off straight away. Leaving it humming is what burns the motor out, and that turns a free fix into a new unit.
- Cut the power at the wall and unplug it or trip the breaker.
- Find the six sided socket in the dead centre of the base. Most units ship with a little wrench for it, often still taped to the side. A quarter inch hex key works just as well.
- Work it back and forth. You will feel resistance and then the jam letting go. On a stubborn one, steady pressure one way for half a minute beats rattling it.
- Look in from above with a flashlight and lift out whatever was stuck using tongs.
- Restore power, press the reset button, run cold water, and try it.
If it is silent
Nothing is reaching the motor at all.
- Reach under the unit and find the red reset button. Press it firmly until you feel it click.
- Try the switch again. An overload trips that button, and a jam earlier in the day is often what tripped it.
- Still nothing? Check the wall switch, then the outlet under the sink, including its GFCI button if it has one.
- Then check the breaker panel.
- If all four are fine and it is still dead, the switch, the outlet, or the motor has failed. That one is ours.
If the flywheel turns freely and the reset holds but the unit still will not run, or if it leaks from the body rather than a connection, stop there. Those are the two that do not get better with persistence.

How do I know if my garbage disposal needs repair?
Watch for strange grinding or humming noises, frequent jamming, leaks under the sink, slow draining, no power, or odors that keep coming back. Any of these is a sign to have the unit checked.
Can a jammed disposal be fixed, or does it need replacing?
Many jams are a quick fix, especially if the motor still runs strong. We diagnose the real cause and recommend replacement only when the motor is burned out, the housing is cracked, or repairs keep piling up.
Why does my disposal keep jamming?
Repeated jams usually come from the wrong items going down the unit, like grease, fibrous vegetables, or bones, or from worn internal components that can no longer grind properly.
What should I never put in a garbage disposal?
Keep out grease and oil, fibrous foods like celery and corn husks, bones, coffee grounds, eggshells in quantity, and starchy items like pasta and potato peels. These cause clogs and wear the unit down.
My disposal has no power. What should I do?
Start with the red reset button on the bottom of the unit and press it until it clicks, then check your breaker and the wall switch. The guide further up this page walks through it. If the unit still will not run, the switch, outlet, or motor may be damaged, and it is time to call a professional.
