After “tank or tankless,” the second question every customer asks me is “what does it actually cost?” The honest answer is that water heater replacement cost in coastal North Carolina varies more than it should because so many contractors hide line items behind a single low headline number, then add charges on the job. I quote everything itemized in writing so you know the full cost before I start. Here is what goes into a real coastal NC water heater quote, what each component costs in 2026, and what to watch for when comparing bids.

I run Wild Water Plumbing and Septic across Onslow, Pender, New Hanover, and Carteret Counties. Here is what fair pricing looks like.

What is actually in a water heater replacement

A proper water heater replacement is not just the new tank. It includes the new unit itself, removal and disposal of the old unit, new flexible water supply connectors, new gas flex line and shutoff valve for gas units, a new T and P relief valve if the existing one is over 5 years old, an expansion tank where current code requires it, new sediment trap on gas lines, electrical disconnect updates for electric units, and the permit fee.

Quotes that omit any of these line items are usually set up to surprise with charges on install day. My quotes show every line and explain why each is there.

Tank water heater costs by type

Standard 40- to 50-gallon electric tank installed: $1,500 to $2,400. The lower end represents a straight like-for-like replacement with no code updates needed. The higher end includes the addition of an expansion tank, replacement of T and P valves, and any drain pan or electrical work required by the current code.

Standard 40- to 50-gallon gas tank installed: $1,800 to $2,800. Gas adds the cost of the new flex line, sediment trap, and any required venting updates. Power-vent gas units cost more than atmospheric-vent models due to the electronic components.

High-capacity 75-gallon or larger tank installed: $2,500 to $3,800. These units cost more upfront and weigh significantly more, which adds labor for placement.

Tankless water heater costs

Gas tankless installed: $3,500 to $6,500. The variation comes from flow rate (5 GPM, 9 GPM, or 11 GPM units), brand (Rinnai, Navien, Rheem, Bosch), gas line upgrades required, and venting changes from the existing tank installation.

Electric tankless installed: $2,500 to $5,000, plus any required electrical panel upgrade. Electric tankless units need 100 to 150 amps of 240V service, which many older coastal NC homes do not have available without a panel upgrade.(all numbers are estimated)

My tank versus tankless guide walks through the cost-over-time comparison.

Heat pump hybrid costs

Heat pump hybrid water heater installed: $2,800 to $4,500. These units cost more than standard electric tanks but use 60 to 70 percent less electricity. They work best in conditioned interior spaces with at least 750 cubic feet of ambient air volume. Garages and unconditioned spaces are not ideal.

What can drive the price up unexpectedly

Gas line upsizing for tankless: $400 to $1,200. Existing half-inch gas lines often need upgrading to three-quarter-inch to feed tankless BTU demand.

Electrical panel upgrade for electric tankless or hybrid: $1,200 to $3,000. Required when the existing panel lacks sufficient capacity for the new unit.

Expansion tank addition: $150 to $300. Required by the current code on closed water systems, but missing on many older installs.

Drain pan and overflow drain installation: $200 to $500. Required in second-story or living area installations.

Vent system updates: $300 to $1,500. Tankless venting requirements differ significantly from those for tank installations, especially for direct-vent installations.

Water softener loop or whole home filter at the same install: $1,200 to $5,000. Many coastal NC homes benefit from installing a water softener at the same time as a water heater replacement, since hard water shortens the lifespan of the old unit. (all numbers are estimated)

How to know you are being quoted fairly

Get itemized written estimates. Make sure each quote includes the same items: unit, removal and disposal, water connectors, gas flex (if gas), T and P valve, expansion tank, electrical or venting work as needed, permit, and labor. Compare apples to apples.

Be wary of the very lowest bid. It usually means line items got dropped to win the comparison, then added back as upcharges on install day.

Be equally wary of the very highest bid. It often loads in components your install does not actually need.

Ask every bidder about brand, warranty length, and labor warranty. A 6-year tank warranty with 1 year labor is the entry level. A 10-year tank warranty with 2 to 5-year labor is the quality range.

Ask every bidder whether they are pulling the permit. A water heater installed without a permit is a problem on resale and can void homeowners’ insurance claims if the unit fails. Bidders who skip permits are not actually cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a water heater replacement actually cost in coastal NC?

A standard 50 gallon electric tank installed runs $1,500 to $2,400. A 50 gallon gas tank runs $1,800 to $2,800. A 75+ gallon high demand tank runs $2,500 to $3,800. Gas tankless installs run $3,500 to $6,500. Electric tankless runs $2,500 to $5,000. Heat pump hybrid runs $2,800 to $4,500. Pricing depends on unit type, install conditions, and any code required updates.

What can drive the price up unexpectedly?

Several things. Gas line upsizing for tankless conversions adds $400 to $1,200. Electrical panel upgrades for electric tankless or hybrids can add $1,200 to $3,000. Required code updates like expansion tanks, sediment traps, or T&P valve relocation add $150 to $500. Difficult access to the install location adds labor cost. Permits add $50 to $200 depending on county. I disclose all contingencies in the quote.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in coastal NC?

Yes for most installations across Onslow, Pender, New Hanover, and Carteret Counties. NC plumbing code requires permits and inspection for water heater installations and replacements. Pulling the permit is part of my standard service. Properly permitted installs protect resale value, satisfy insurance requirements, and ensure the work meets current code.

How long does water heater replacement take?

A like for like tank replacement takes 2 to 4 hours typically. A tankless conversion from a tank install runs 4 to 8 hours depending on gas line work, venting changes, and electrical updates needed. Hybrid installs run 3 to 5 hours. Same day completion is the norm unless major code updates or service upgrades are involved.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace an older water heater?

For units over 10 years old with significant issues like tank corrosion, multiple component failures, or scale damage, replacement is usually more economical than repair. The repair just postpones the next failure. For units under 8 years old with single component failures like a thermocouple, heating element, or pressure relief valve, repair makes sense. I quote both options when both are viable.
