PUMP CYCLING LIKE CRAZY?
If your well pump is kicking on every few seconds when nobody is using water, your pressure tank has almost certainly failed. Call 910.750.2312 for same day pressure tank service across Onslow, Pender, and New Hanover counties.
If you have well water in coastal North Carolina and your pump suddenly sounds like it is having a panic attack, kicking on every few seconds when nobody is using water, your pressure tank has almost certainly failed. I see this every single week across Onslow, Pender, New Hanover, and Carteret Counties. The good news is the fix is cheaper than most people expect. The bad news is that ignoring it will destroy your well pump in weeks, and a new pump costs three to five times more than a new tank.
I run Wild Water Plumbing and Septic. Pressure tank replacement is one of the most common well service calls I take. Here is everything I tell my customers when they ask if their tank is the problem and what it will cost to fix.
What a pressure tank actually does
A pressure tank, sometimes called a captive air tank or bladder tank, stores pressurized water between pump cycles. Inside the metal shell is a rubber bladder. On one side of the bladder is compressed air at about 28 to 38 PSI. On the other side is your household water. When you open a faucet, the compressed air pushes water out through your plumbing. When the tank drains down to your pump cut-in pressure, the pressure switch starts the pump. When the tank fills back up to the cut-out pressure, the switch stops it.
The whole point of the tank is to give your pump a rest between every small water use. Without it, your pump would have to run for every single fixture in the house. With a healthy tank, the pump stays off most of the time and only runs to refill the reservoir.
Signs your pressure tank is dying
The number one sign is rapid pump cycling, also called short cycling. Your pump turns on and off every few seconds when a single faucet is running. That is the bladder telling you it has lost its air charge.
Other signs include weak or fluctuating water pressure at the showerhead, water spitting and sputtering out of fixtures, a tank that feels completely full of water when you tap on the metal shell (a healthy tank sounds partly hollow up top), or water dripping from the Schrader air valve on the top of the tank.
You may also notice your electric bill creeping up. A short cycling pump uses way more energy than one running normal cycles, because the startup current on a pump motor is much higher than the run current. If the tank fails and the pump never rests, the motor runs warm constantly, which shortens its life by years.
What pressure tank replacement costs in coastal NC
Most pressure tank replacements in my service area run between $500 and $1,200 installed. The price depends on the tank size you need (20 gallon, 30 gallon, 44 gallon, or 86 gallon are the common ones), the tank brand (Well-X-Trol, Amtrol, and Flexcon are my regulars), and how accessible your equipment is.
If your pressure switch is also corroded or worn out, expect to add $150 to $300 for that. If the discharge piping is brittle galvanized that crumbles when we touch it, repiping the connections adds another $200 to $400. For most homes, the all in number lands somewhere between $700 and $1,500.
Replace or repair? How I decide
Sometimes the air precharge in a tank just needs to be re-pumped. That is a $100 to $200 service call. But if the bladder itself has ruptured, no amount of repumping fixes it. The water and air are now mixing inside the tank, and the only fix is a new tank.
A simple field test tells the story. With the pump off and water drained, I press the Schrader valve on top of the tank. If air comes out clean and steady, the bladder may still be good and the tank just needs recharging. If water sprays out of that valve, the bladder is finished.
For pumps over 10 years old paired with tanks over 8 years old, I usually recommend replacing both at the same time. A new tank protects a tired pump, and you save labor on a return trip later.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do pressure tanks last in coastal North Carolina?
Most pressure tanks last 8 to 12 years in this region. Salt air corrosion on the metal shell, mineral heavy water from the Castle Hayne Aquifer, and short cycling from worn pressure switches all shorten that lifespan. I see plenty of 6 year old tanks fail and a few 15 year old tanks that are still going strong.
Can I replace a pressure tank myself?
You can if you have plumbing experience and the right tools. You need to drain the system, disconnect the pressure switch and wiring, replace the tank tee fittings, set the new air precharge to 2 PSI below pump cut-in pressure, and bleed the system. Most homeowners I meet decide the few hundred dollars in labor is worth skipping the headaches.
What size pressure tank do I need for my home?
For most single family homes I install 20 or 30 gallon tanks. Larger homes with multiple bathrooms or irrigation systems benefit from 44 or 86 gallon tanks because they give the pump longer rest cycles. Bigger tanks cost more upfront but extend pump life by years.
Will a new pressure tank improve my water pressure?
It will if your low pressure was caused by tank failure. A working tank delivers steady pressure between pump cycles. If your pump itself is worn out or your pressure switch is set too low, a new tank alone will not fix the pressure problem. That is why I always check the full system before quoting a job.
How long does pressure tank replacement take?
A standard residential replacement takes about 2 to 3 hours start to finish. That includes draining the system, swapping the tank, replacing any worn fittings, recharging the new tank to the correct precharge pressure, and testing the cycle to confirm the pump and switch are working properly with the new equipment.
