coastal septic problems NC

How Jacksonville Soil Conditions Affect Your Septic System Lifespan

Jacksonville, NC soil is wet, shallow, and close to the water table in most of the residential areas surrounding Camp Lejeune and the New River. That combination can shorten the life of your septic system significantly if it is not designed and maintained correctly for the actual conditions in the ground beneath your property.

The Sandy Soil Problem

Sandy soil — common in many Jacksonville neighborhoods near Piney Green, New Bridge, and Western Boulevard — drains quickly, which sounds like an advantage for a drain field. The problem is that it drains so quickly that effluent passes through the treatment zone without adequate contact with the soil bacteria responsible for breaking down contaminants. Over time this creates both a groundwater risk and a progressive reduction in the soil’s ability to sustain healthy bacterial activity. A drain field installed in sandy soil needs more frequent maintenance and careful load management than one in loam.

The Clay-Heavy Soil Problem

In older sections of Jacksonville and in neighborhoods built on former farmland, clay-heavy subsoil creates the opposite problem. Clay holds water rather than allowing it to drain. A drain field in clay soil reaches its absorption limit faster than one in sandy loam, and it recovers more slowly between rain events. Systems installed in clay-dominated soil in Onslow County often need replacement before they reach even the lower end of the 20-to-30-year lifespan range.

The Water Table Factor

The proximity of the New River, Wilson Bay, and the tidal creeks throughout Onslow County means the groundwater table in Jacksonville rises significantly after major rain events. When the water table rises above or into the drain field’s absorption zone, the field temporarily loses its ability to accept effluent. Repeated tidal and precipitation cycles that keep the drain field soil saturated for extended periods accelerate bio-mat development and reduce total lifespan.
